Jazz Efforts Fall Short to Magic, 115-107: Winners & Losers

The Utah Jazz dropped to 1-7 since the trade deadline after defeating the Orlando Magic 115-107. Playoff hopes continue to dwindle while losses stockpile for a Jazz team primed for postseason promise just weeks ago.

Last night's performance was competitive in spurts, but the reality of going through the motions and lack of engagement is beginning to set in. Nine Jazzmen were awarded game minutes, with Lauri Markkanen being the sole optimistic game producer. He recorded a net rating of 0.

Let's look at the winners and losers of the Jazz Magic contest.

Taylor Hendricks | Winner

Hendricks seems to have worked his way into a permanent starting role this season, barring injury. Last night, he posted 10 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal while shooting 50% from the field. 

His court maturity is noticeable, and he doesn't make the obvious defensive mistakes he did earlier in the season. A future fixture piece for the Jazz organization, he is also flashing the ability to contribute from multiple positions after spending one season in college. We did not see much of this young man in the summer or pre-season, but his recent play should have complete confidence from Jazz Nation!

Keyonte George | Winner

George posted 19 points while handing out nine assists and continues to accept the challenges of becoming the leader of the pack as a rookie for the Jazz. I thought the Jazz's decision to make him a starter was premature due to the experience and then the recent play of guard Kris Dunn. 

George has stepped into the starting role and handled himself like a true professional at a young age. Imagine yourself trying to lead anything at 20 years old, let alone an NBA basketball team. George has made his presence loud and clear, and the Jazz certainly selected the correct choice on draft day. He is a Winner!

Jazz Front Office | Loser

As mentioned, the Jazz were headed into post-season action before the trade deadline. I still wonder why the Jazz have decided not to make the playoffs this season. 

Most teams must taste the playoffs before experiencing success at that level, but the key is getting there. Teams must also consider how current players and free agents view the tanking recipe if contemplating a particular organization. 

Markkanen is the top player for the Jazz, and one should begin to wonder if he will re-sign or if he agrees with waiving seasons. This is just food for your thoughts, but the Jazz and all NBA teams should dismantle all signs of losing.

The Jazz will remain on the road and battle the Miami Heat on Saturday at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. Tip will be 5:00 pm MST
