It was never a good idea to talk trash to Michael Jordan
USA TODAY Sports

Talking trash to Michael Jordan was a verbal battlefield on which so many players were defeated. Still, it didn't stop some from jawing it up with MJ. One player in particular—lefty point guard Darrick Martin—did it when His Airness was preparing to play in a first full season following his first NBA comeback. Safe to say, things didn't end well for Martin and his team at the time, the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Legendary Space Jam runs

Jordan was shooting "Space Jam" at the time and was spending a lot of time in Los Angeles. In between shooting his scenes, Jordan was getting back in game shape. He was working out and regularly invited basketball players, both from the NBA and the NCAA, to play in pick-up games at the set.

One of the players that received an invite was Martin, a 5-foot-11 guard from UCLA who, at the time, had already played in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves. In a stunning conclusion to one game, Martin got past Jordan's defense and went all the way for the game-winning layup. It was at that moment when Martin decided to talk some smack.

"Michael, you get out of my town; you are not even the real MJ. My man Magic is the real MJ," said Martin.

Regular season revenge

The regular season came around, and the Chicago Bulls played against Vancouver on November 30th, 1995. The Bulls were playing in the last game of a very long road trip and just didn't have it against the Grizzlies, who were hammering them all game long and were up by nine in the fourth quarter. The outspoken Martin took this as a sign to talk even more trash to Jordan.

"Told you we're gonna whoop your a** tonight," said Martin after scoring an and-one.

Jordan had an awful game with just 10 points to his name. Upon hearing what Martin said, he tied his shoes back up, subbed into the game, and led the Bulls to a 94-88 come-from-behind win. Jordan was spectacular in the game's final six minutes, scoring 19 points in that stretch for a total of 29.

Afterward, he tracked down Martin on the Grizzlies' bench and told him:

"Shut up, you little bit**!"

This event was a reminder of why you should always respect MJ's game and never talk trash to him. It certainly wasn't the last time Jordan took out his anger on someone for talking smack, but it definitely served as a warning shot to those who thought they could mess with His Airness.
