Former Thunder Player Gives Back to Local Community

Lindy Waters III has been an inspiration for many since he stepped onto an NBA court. 

Playing with the Enid Outlaws prior to getting a call from the Thunder, it was a miracle for the 6-foot-6 sharpshooter to even get a shot at the professional level. An Oklahoma State alumni, Waters III made the most of his opportunity, buying into OKC's culture and even earning some significant time on the court. 

In March of 2022, Waters III managed to score a team-high 25 points in a showdown against his high school teammate, Trae Young. Not only did Waters III inspire people to never give up on their dreams after going from a semi-professional team to the NBA, but he frequently honors and exalts his Kiowa and Cherokee roots. 

“Seeing pictures of my ancestors and stories of them helped shape who I am and helps me strive for those people that came before me,” Waters III told OKC Thunder media.

The former Norman resident is no stranger to community service, as he has been hosting giveaways and other events since his time at Oklahoma State. 

This summer, Waters III's foundation raised and gifted a total of $20,000 in scholarships to 10 native high school seniors that are preparing to continue their education in college. 

"I'm so blessed to be able to give back whatever piece of the pie I have to the next generation," Waters III said in an Instagram post. "Just three years ago I was cruising around OKC not knowing what my next meal would be... Here's to the best year yet." 

Waters III's tremendous charitable spirit is an exemplification of Thunder culture, and the type of players that Sam Presti is looking for. Earlier this summer, second-year wing Ousmane Dieng did his fair share of community service, attending multiple Thunder Cares' events designed to gift basketball gear to underprivileged youth in the area.

In late June, Oklahoma City declined Waters III's team option, making him an unrestricted free agent this offseason. OKC may still bring Waters III back for another two-way deal, but the 6-foot-6 wing is currently eligible to sign with any team in the league.

In two seasons with the Thunder, Waters III appeared in 66 total NBA games, averaging 6.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per game while shooting 36% from 3-point range. Given his size, shooting confidence and defensive ability, it would not be surprising to see the local product earn a G League contract or two way deal somewhere in the NBA.
