Clippers Erase Deficit to Beat Nuggets Despite Jokic’s Triple-Double
Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports

In a thrilling showdown during Thursday’s NBA action, the Los Angeles Clippers managed to erase an early 17-point deficit, securing a 102-100 victory against the Denver Nuggets, despite a monumental triple-double performance from Nikola Jokic.

Paul George led the Clippers with 28 points, complemented by James Harden‘s 20 points, in a game that saw the Clippers snap a five-game home losing streak without the aid of Kawhi Leonard, sidelined by a sore right knee.

“All in all, it was a good win for us,” Harden said. “The first quarter we got down and didn’t panic and the second quarter we made some shots. Defensively, we locked in.”

Jokic, delivering a staggering 36 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists, showcased his versatility and skill, marking his 24th triple-double of the season. Yet, his last-second 3-point attempt, which could have clinched the game for the Nuggets, fell short.

Denver faced additional challenges when coach Michael Malone was ejected for contesting calls with the officials, shifting the game’s momentum. The Clippers capitalized, particularly in the final quarter, extending their lead through precise free-throw shooting.

Jokic acknowledged the Clippers’ defensive capabilities, despite not facing Leonard.

“Kawhi didn’t play but they have multiple guys who can defend multiple positions. That’s why they’re so good,” Jokic said.

The match’s conclusion was tense, with both teams exchanging crucial baskets. However, Jokic’s final attempt to secure a win for the Nuggets was unsuccessful, affirming the Clippers’ victory.

“It’s really hard in those situations, especially because I think the ball was in the worst possible spot,” Jokic said. “Sometimes you make it, sometimes you don’t.”

The Clippers’ bench played a pivotal role, particularly in overturning the deficit in the second quarter. Harden’s performance was crucial, rebounding from an initial slow start to contribute significantly to the Clippers’ halftime lead.

This victory prepares the Clippers for their next encounter against the Utah Jazz, while the Nuggets aim to recover against the Atlanta Hawks. This game underscores the unpredictability of the NBA, where every play can tilt the balance of victory and defeat.
