Celtics reportedly targeting veteran big, former All-Star to bolster rebounding

The Boston Celtics gave up nine offensive rebounds in just one quarter when facing the injury-plagued Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday. Boston had been one of the better rebounding teams this season, yet suddenly finds itself struggling to protect the glass.

With the trade deadline coming up on Feb. 8, It's no surprise that they're being linked with veteran big man Andre Drummond.

HoopsHype's Michael Scotto has reported Boston is exploring multiple trade options to solidify their bench. Drummond's name is on the list of targets.

"The Celtics are looking to package some of their minimum contract players at the end of the rotation and draft pick compensation to bolster their bench heading into the playoffs, league sources told HoopsHype," Scotto wrote. "...Drummond would fit the parameters of Boston’s current compensation package above, while Olynyk and Wright would likely cost more."

Drummond's value around the league took a significant leap during his run within the Chicago Bulls starting lineup. He filled in admirably while Nikola Vucevic was sidelined by injury. During that seven-game spell, Drummond averaged 14 points, 17.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks over 27.7 minutes

Furthermore, with Zach LaVine likely out for the rest of the season and not having a viable trade market, Chicago could be more incentivized to move Drummond.

Boston would likely welcome the additional size and physicality. Drummond is known as one of the best rebounders in the NBA. He can provide rim protection as part of a drop defense. He would also bring some vertical spacing on offense when operating out of the dunker spot or as the roll man in pick-and-roll scenarios.

Luke Kornet would likely slide further down the rotation to occupy a fourth-string role. And Neemias Queta's chances of seeing playing time would take a hammer blow. However, Drummond would provide exceptional insurance for Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis, two bigs with injury histories. Boston likes to rotate both big men during back-to-backs, which could allow Drummond to see significant playing time within Boston's rotation.

With a growing need for additional rebounding and a genuine requirement for a talented and experienced backup at the center position, it would make sense if Brad Stevens targeted Drummond. His $3.6 million salary fits within the team's traded player exception. As such, the Celtics could acquire him for a package of second-round draft picks, of which they have plenty.
