Kenny Florian recently had some high praise for popular UFC lightweight star Dustin Poirier.
"The Diamond" is set to return to the Octagon next month at UFC 299. Opposite him will be the fearsome Benoît Saint Denis. The fight will mark Poirier's first appearance in the cage since his devastating second-round KO loss to Justin Gaethje back at UFC 291.
A former interim lightweight champion, Poirier has never gotten his hands on the undisputed gold. His two cracks at winning the top 155-pound prize saw him lose via submission, first to Khabib Nurmagomedov and later to Charles Oliveira.
During a recent edition of the Anik & Florian Podcast, Kenny Florian asked who he considered the greatest fighter to never win undisputed UFC gold.
Florian was quick to highlight Poirer, and made reference to training with him during Poirier's run in the featherweight division.
"So for me it's a guy that's already in the UFC," Florian said. "That's still fighting to this day, it's a guy that I cut weight with back in the day, when he was cutting down to 145 pounds. And I'm looking at him going 'Man, this guy's as big as me, how is he making 145 pounds?' Well, that guy is Dustin Poirier and, you know, had some hiccups earlier on his career when he was trying to figure out his game, figure out his style, figure out his weight class. Still has an awesome record at 29 and 8. But as I said, you know, a lot of those losses are a little bit early on in his career."
Florian went on to discuss the star-studded list of fighters Poirier has defeated over the years, including Conor McGregor, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, Michael Chandler, and Anthony Pettis. Florian also went on to praise Poirier's well-rounded fight game.
"This guy's good everywhere," Florian said. "He's a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, he's become a fantastic strike, he really has good wrestling as well, he knows how to put it all together."
