Michael Bisping Offers Georges St-Pierre Example To Outline How Ilia Topuria Can Have Grappling Success Against Alexander Volkanovski At UFC 298
Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union / USA TODAY NETWORK

Through Ilia Topuria's undefeated run in the UFC that has led him to a featherweight title shot at UFC 298, two of his main attributes have been getting the job done.

His boxing and grappling have allowed him to either ragdoll opponents around the Octagon or put them out on the feet whilst showing against Josh Emmett that he has far more to offer than just power in his hands.

Topuria will likely need to utilize every aspect of his game if he is going to dethrone the incredibly well-rounded 145-pound champion, Alexander Volkanovski.

Volkanovski has proven time and time again that he is an expert striker but his contests with lightweight champion Islam Makhachev also showcased his grappling ability.

Off the back of those fights, Michael Bisping does not believe Topuria will be able to go to the well with his grappling unless he is able to set it up with his striking first.

Michael Bisping Uses His Own Loss To Georges St-Pierre To Describe How Ilia Topuria Can Be Effective With His Grappling At UFC 298

In a recent YouTube video, Bisping broke down the main event of February 17 by talking about Topuria's best paths to victory.

The former middleweight champion pushed back slightly on the challenger's team stating that they will be able to take Volkanovski down if they want to.

Bisping instead provided a different route which he believes would see Topuria have more success with his grappling.

"The best chances for Topuria to take him down is to land with the hands, distract him, use them as feints and then take him down. Surprise him or have him wobbled and to get a submission, yeah he could do that, of course he could. I'm not gonna insult Topuria by saying that he couldn't submit Volkanovski but the way that he would do that would be to soften him up on the feet, land a couple of shots and ground and pound and then submit him."

Bisping then went on to reference a fight from his career where he found himself in the exact scenario that he's outlining for Topuria and Volkanovski.

"The Count" spoke about his submission loss at UFC 217 and how the strikes he absorbed were crucial to him getting caught in a rear-naked choke.

"For example, not to talk about myself, when I lost to Georges St-Pierre, he choked me out in round three. He took me down a few times and he wasn't able to get anywhere close to a submission, couldn't really pass guard, I would get back to my feet every time.

"When he caught me with a big left hook, 'because we know that I does not see out of that left eye too well so that was the strategy' (GSP impression, no I'm not intoxicated. He caught me with a big left hook that dropped me, couple more shots, I thought 'f*** this, I'm getting back to my feet' but I'm not with it. I'm not composed, I'm dazed and confused, like most of the time, so you're not thinking properly and he got me in the rear-naked choke."
