During a recent discussion on the current state of MMA, American Kickboxing Academy coach Javier Mendez discussed the importance of throwing in the towel.

While it's certainly not the kind of decision any coach or cornerman wants to make, it can often prove to be essential for a fighter's safety. Where the referee might fail to call time, it falls to the endangered fighter's team to make the tough call.

The AKA has produced a litany of supreme MMA talent over the years, including Khabib Nurmagomedov, Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier, and Luke Rockhold. When discussing throwing in the towel, Mendez used the brutal example of Daniel Cormier fighting Jon Jones.

Previously considered all but unbeatable, Cormier ran into a wall in the form of 'Bones' at both UFC 182 and UFC 214. Seemingly prepared for everything 'DC' had to throw at him, Jones handed the former Olympian the first two losses of his career.

"Cain Velasquez Got So Upset" - Javier Mendez

Mendez revealed that former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez, a close friend and training partner of Cormier's, was furious during the second of Cormier's wars with Jones.

Alarmed by the level of punishment 'DC' had taken after the head kick from Jones had landed, the heavyweight endurance machine wanted referee 'Big' John McCarthy to put a stop to the bout. Furious with the referee, a heated Velasquez apparently wanted to put a beating on him.

Fortunately, that didn't happen.

"Like with DC with Jon Jones, when he was at the very end there, when John [McCarthy] let it go on, you know," Mendez said. "That fight, Cain Velasquez got so upset, he got so upset because that fight continued, that he wanted to beat up John McCarthy in the back. Yeah, he was so upset, and I don't blame Cain, but you know, John's a great ref, don't get me wrong, but he screwed up on that one, you know? And Cain just said to him, 'Dude, man, you let that go on too long'."
