Aljamain Sterling Brands Marlon Vera Title Shot 'Disrespectful To The Belt' In Light Of UFC 299 Result
Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The main event of UFC 299 ended up being a relatively one-sided affair, as Sean O'Malley convincingly defended his bantamweight title.

There was no hiding the fact that Marlon Vera was not the number one contender at 135 pounds, but the fight was put together because of his history with "Sugar."

"Chito" is still the only man to defeat O'Malley in his career, and now that he held the title, the champ wanted to prove that the first fight with Vera was a result of the injury he suffered in the fight and nothing else.

This leaves several contenders in the division believing that it should have been them getting the title shot, and they have a convincing argument after the way the fight played out.

Cory Sandhagen, who put on a dominant performance against Vera in March of last year, was very critical of the fight after the event. He specifically directed his talking points at Vera being granted the fight.

Sterling Agrees Vera Did Not Deserve Opportunity To Fight O'Malley At UFC 299

Former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling posted a response to some of Sandhagen's statements on social media.

"Funk Master" is also in the camp who believe that Vera should not have been the person to face O'Malley in Miami just because of their history.

While he did show some respect for "Chito" and the toughness he displayed in the fight, Sterling agreed with "The Sandman" that it wasn't the right move for the division.

"Lol and somehow I’m the hater for pointing out these facts that Chito is solid, but did not belong in there 'on that night'. All because of a former loss, we gave a layup title defense? It’s pretty disrespectful to the belt and what it means, and to all the other hard-working competitors, working their asses off to EARN to that position. Respect for Chito taking that damage for 25min. Hope to see him back and improved on his game."
