Yankees Reached out to New York Mets About Carlos Carrasco

A crosstown rival trade that never came together.

According to SNY's Andy Martino, back in December the Yankees reached out to the Mets about potentially trading for right-handed starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco.

However, as Martino went on to report, the Mets were trying to clear payroll to sign star infielder Carlos Correa, but once the deal fell through they took Carrasco off the market.

Per Martino:

"Back in December, the Yankees did ask the Mets about Carlos Carrasco ($14 million), but that was when the Mets thought they were signing Carlos Correa and wanted to offload payroll elsewhere. League sources believe that Carrasco came off the market once the Mets’ deal with Correa fell through."

The Mets exercised Carrasco's $14 million club option in the offseason to keep him on the roster in 2023.

Carrasco's name was brought up in trade rumors this winter after the Mets went out and signed Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana. Had Carrasco been dealt, this would've left David Peterson and Tylor Megill to battle it out for a spot in the rotation. Instead, this duo will likely serve as depth starters in Triple-A Syracuse.

And now we know the Mets were only considering moving Carrasco to clear room on the payroll for Correa.

Last season, Carrasco had a bounce-back year for the Mets, posting a 15-7 record, 3.97 ERA and 152 strikeouts in 152 innings across 29 starts.

This season, Carrasco will likely slide in at the No. 4 spot in the Mets' rotation after Senga.
