Yankees Officially Release Pair Of Ex-Red Sox Players With Free Agency Looming

The Boston Red Sox could bring back two familiar faces after they elected free agency Monday.

The New York Yankees are coming off another failed season, and already are changing up their roster. The Red Sox are in a similar spot and now have an opportunity to sweep up some of New York's recently released vets, two of which also have a history in Beantown.

The Yankees announced that both Franchy Cordero and Ryan Weber were outrighted, and as of Monday, both have opted to elect free agency over a minor-league contract.

Cordero struggled in his few opportunities in the majors, hitting .188 with eight extra-base hits including six home runs, 13 RBIs and a .689 OPS in 24 games this season.

Weber had much more success, posting a 2.16 ERA with a 10-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .247 batting average against and 1.00 WHIP in 25 innings for the Yankees between 2022-23.

While bringing back either of these two would be an intriguing sign, neither makes sense for the Red Sox.

Weber doesn't necessarily fit what newly hired chief of baseball officer Craig Breslow is looking for, and there are better options on the table than Cordero -- not to mention the abundance of left-handed hitting outfielders.
