Yankees, Mets Reportedly Both Showing Interest In Same Free Agent Pitcher

The New York Yankees could have some stiff competition for one of the top remaining free-agent pitchers. 

New York seemingly has been linked to every pitcher that might be available since losing ace Gerrit Cole for at least one or two months due to an elbow injury.

The Yankees have a massive payroll and likely won't pay up for someone like Jordan Montgomery because the club would be hit with a massive tax bill. There are cheaper options out there that could help, though. 

One of the most prominent players who keep on being brought up with the Yankees is 2023 All-Star Michael Lorenzen. The 32-year-old had a 4.18 ERA last season with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies and could be a big help.

While that is the case, the Yankees will have some stiff competition as the New York Mets also have been linked to Lorenzen, according to MLB Trade Rumors' Darragh McDonald

"The club has been connected to pitchers like Michael Lorenzen and Jordan Montgomery, both of whom remain unsigned," McDonald said. "Lorenzen has reportedly been seeking a two-year deal while also receiving interest from clubs like the (Chicago White Sox) and Mets."

This isn't the first time the Yankees and Mets have been linked to the same free agent since the 2023 season ended. Both New York clubs heavily pursued Yoshinobu Yamamoto but missed out to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lorenzen could help out either club but it's unclear exactly where he will land as he's been linked to a few other teams as well, like the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros. 

Opening Day is right around the corner so it wouldn't be surprising to see him sign soon.
