The Chicago White Sox suffered their seventh shutout loss of the season, a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. Chicago’s latest exercise in futility featured Garrett Crochet’s worst start of the season and yet another dreadful offensive performance. White Sox hitters reached base only five times with two singles and three walks.

Meanwhile, the Phillies' lineup showed the run-producing prowess that enchanted baseball fans to their club in the postseason. Philadelphia teed off on Chicago’s lefty with three homers, two of which came from Alec Bohm. Bohm belted three-run homers in the first and third innings. Whit Merrifield blasted a leadoff solo homer off of Crochet in the fourth.

Quick and Painful

With the score 7-0, Crochet's night ended after he recorded only nine outs. Chris Flexen, pitching in relief for the first time, did a solid job holding the Phillies scoreless and saving the bullpen. Tim Hill faced four hitters in a runless eighth inning.

“He got behind in the count and threw too many pitches,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifo said of Crochet's outing. “Every time there’s a crooked number there’s probably a walk somewhere."

Crochet almost exited the first unscathed. However, Braden Shewmake was positioned too deep at third base, allowing the speedy Trea Turner to beat out a ground ball. Bohm’s homer occurred after J.T. Realmuto struck out looking for the innings’s second out.

Too Little, Too Late

Despite a nice job from the relief crew, the White Sox offense remained a crime against the sport of baseball. Phillies starter Spencer Turnbull took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Gavin Sheets hit a single that landed on the right-field grass to spoil the righty's hitless run.

Sheets became the only White Sox runner to reach third base after Andrew Vaughn’s walk and Andrew Benintendi’s groundout. Nicky Lopez added the only other hit, an infield single, in the eighth.

News and Notes

John Brebbia began his rehab stint in Triple-A Charlotte Friday night, striking out two in the opening inning.

Tommy Pham begins his minor league tune-up on Saturday. The Charlotte Knights announced his addition to their active roster.
