White Sox DFA Romy Gonzalez to Open Roster Spot for John Brebbia
Matt Marton-USA TODAY Sports

New Chicago White Sox general manager Chris Getz continues to reshape his roster as the team officially signed reliever John Brebbia and designated utility man Romy Gonzalez for assignment on Friday.

Gonzalez has endured a journey of ups and downs with the White Sox marked by promising potential and unfortunate setbacks. He burst onto the scene in 2021 after a stellar minor-league season in which he hit 24 homers with a 141 wRC+. At the time, Gonzalez seemed poised to become a versatile bench piece for a team in the middle of its contention window.

However, injuries and the White Sox' innate ability to stray off-path significantly hampered Gonzalez's ability to contribute consistently at the MLB level.

Last season, Gonzalez saw 44 games of action and slashed a career-low .194/.208/.376 before a troublesome shoulder injury required labrum surgery in August.

With new infielders Paul De Jong, Nicky Lopez , and Braden Shewmake in tow, the White Sox are pivoting off of Gonzalez for the time being.
