White Sox Announce Roster Moves Before Doubleheader
Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

The never-ending roster churn of the baseball season provided a roster shuffle for the Chicago White Sox this afternoon. The White Sox called up reliever Jimmy Lambert as the 27th man for tonight's doubleheader against the Blue Jays. The injury bug struck another White Sox pitcher, landing Joe Kelly on the IL. Nick Padilla will take Kelly's place on the roster while the veteran recovers from elbow inflammation.

Lambert returns to Chicago and will join his pen mates after the righty earned a demotion last month. Lambert landed on the IL on May 29th with an ankle injury and has followed up a strong 2022 campaign with a brutal 6.85 ERA in 22.1 innings. The underperforming righty landed in triple-A Charlotte after being outpitched by newly added righty Touki Toussaint in a 6-3 loss to Texas.

Joe "IL" Kelly

Joe Kelly lands on the IL again, this time with right elbow inflammation in his White Sox tenure. In April, the veteran righty spent time on the IL with a groin injury sustained while entering the field in a skirmish with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 35-year-old put together a dominant stretch of relief pitching in May, but since then, he's pitched to a 7.24 ERA in his last 15 appearances.

Nick Padilla will replace Kelly on the big league roster for now.  Chicago claimed the righty off waivers after the Chicago Cubs released him in September. Padilla failed to impress in two stints with the South Siders, allowing seven hits and a walk in 3.2 innings.

What's On Tap Next?

The Chicago White Sox pitching staff continues to be decimated by injuries. Yesterday, the Pale Hose picked up Jordan Holloway, who opted out of his minor league deal with the Cubs to add depth to triple-A. Injuries and a likely firesale at the deadline could leave the White Sox pitching with little talent come August.
