During a mostly quiet week at the 2023 MLB Winter Meetings, the Chicago White Sox were surprisingly one of the only teams to make headlines. In a move that flew under the radar, the White Sox signed pitcher Jake Cousins to a minor-league deal.
Cousins was a 20th-round pick of the Washington Nationals in the 2017 MLB Draft. The right-hander has spent most of his professional career in the minors but has a few MLB stints under his belt.
In 142.2 innings scattered across six minor-league seasons, Cousins owns a 3.28 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 11.36 K/9. The 6-foot-2 hurler has a 3.08 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 12.30 K/9 in 52.2 innings across 51 MLB appearances. His best big-league season came in 2021 when he posted a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings for the Milwaukee Brewers.
This past season, Cousins bounced between the Brewers and Houston Astros organizations. He had a 4.82 ERA in 9.1 innings for Milwaukee and a 6.35 ERA in 28.1 innings across three minor-league stops.
Cousins is one of four pitchers to join the White Sox organization this week. Chris Getz and Co. reportedly signed Erick Fedde to an MLB deal on Tuesday and selected Shane Drohan and righty Jose Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox in Wednesday's Rule 5 Draft.
Upon signing his minor-league deal with the White Sox, Cousins has been assigned to Triple-A Charlotte's roster.
