Watch: Yankees infielder continues batting practice during earthquake

Gleyber Torres didn't let a 4.8 -magnitude earthquake stop him from taking hacks during batting practice on Friday before the New York Yankees' home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The rare event "shook Yankee Stadium" at 10:23 a.m. ET, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, less than three hours ahead of the much-anticipated home debut of All-Star outfielder Juan Soto.

Friday also gave fans in the Bronx a first glimpse of fellow offseason acquisition Marcus Stroman. The right-handed 2023 All-Star starting pitcher took the mound for his second outing of the season after earning a win in his first appearance with the Yankees last Saturday.

Hoch said the shaking lasted "about 30 seconds" and was "felt throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and elsewhere."

Yankees manager Aaron Boone grew up in Orange County, California, so Friday's happenings weren't anything new for him.

“I grew up in these things,” Boone said, according to Hoch. “I thought it was the sound system, actually. Then I’m like, ‘No, that wasn’t the sound system.’ I felt that, just vibration under my feet. I’m used to it.”
