Watch: Giants shortstop airmails throw on routine grounder
San Francisco Giants shortstop Nick Ahmed Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco Giants shortstop Nick Ahmed on Sunday sent in his official entry for the worst throw of the 2024 MLB season.

The Giants were leading 1-0 over the Philadelphia Phillies in the bottom of the second inning at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pa.

Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm was the first batter up to face Giants starter Logan Webb.

Bohm chopped an 83-mph sweeper toward Ahmed. What should have been a routine groundout turned into one of the worst defensive low-lights of Ahmed’s career.

In all fairness to Ahmed, his left cleat appeared to get stuck in the dirt as he made the throw. Ahmed is usually a sure-handed fielder.

But it’s hard not to see the humor in a two-time Gold Glove winner sailing a throw into the opposing team’s dugout.

Bohm ended up at second base following Ahmed’s error. He scored four batters later on a broken-bat single from shortstop Edmundo Sosa.

The embarrassing error was Ahmed’s third of the season.
