Watch: Benches clear in Brewers-Rays game as Abner Uribe and Jose Siri throw punches in heated altercation
Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

Tempers boiled over on Tuesday night as the Milwaukee Brewers hosted Tampa Bay Rays at the American Family Field. An altercation between pitcher Abner Uribe and slugger Jose Siri ignited a massive brawl which led to benches being cleared.

The tensions got high early on when Jose Siri took pitcher Freddy Peralta deep in the third inning. In his next at-bat, Siri worked up a 3-0 count in his favor before Peralta’s next offering hit him on the leg which lead to a furious reaction from Rays manager Kevin Cash .

Thus in his next plate appearance, the spotlight was on how Siri would react to this. He was unable to do much damage as Uribe claimed a routine groundout. However, the pitcher did not seem to be pleased with the actions of Siri and exchanged a few words with him while giving Siri a little nudge on the shoulder.

This exchange between them got physical when Uribe threw some punches at him. Rhys Hoskins , who tried to come in between them, would trip down, while the benches got cleared. Replays later showed that Siri connected some strong throws in the second go.

Following this altercation, the two players were ejected from the game. Earlier, Freddy Peralta and Milwaukee Brewers coach Pat Murphy were also given their marching orders by the officials. On such a hot night, the Brewers eventually came out on top as 8-2 victors.

Jose Siri offers insights regarding wild brawl with Abner Uribe

After the game, Jose Siri was asked about the incident regarding Abner Uribe. The Dominican Republic star would go on to explain the situation and alleged that Uribe hit him because he “felt like it“.

Siri was not pleased when Uribe hit him on the shoulders while trying to walk back to the mound. This led him to asking him why he (Uribe) did that.

When I went to first base, I just went there normal, and he kind of hit me on the shoulder, so I asked him why did he do that. And he just said, 'Because I felt like it'... From right there nothing was said. That's when he threw the first punch, and I defended myself with the two punches. Jose Siri said through his interpreter as per Bally Sports Sun

Meanwhile, Uribe claimed it was “one of those moments” that got heated and the words exchanged there should not have happened.

There were some words shared that didn’t have much to do with the game that probably shouldn’t have been shared there in that exchange. It’s one of those moments that was a hot situation in the game itself. Abner Uribe said as per Todd Rosiak of Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

With the win in this game, the Brewers continued to remain top of the National League Central division. Meanwhile, things are not looking good for the Tampa Bay Rays, who are still bottom of the American League East standings with a 14-17 record in their first 31 games of the season.
