Twins land star SS Carlos Correa on three-year, $105.3 million deal

The Minnesota Twins made a significant splash early Saturday morning by landing two-time All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa on a three-year, $105.3 million contract, according to Mark Berman of Fox 26 in Houston.

Correa, 27, was the first overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft and spent the beginning of his career with the Houston Astros. He earned AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2015 and All-Star nods in 2017 and 2021. Last season, Correa batted .279 with 92 runs batted in and a career-best 26 home runs. He finished fifth in AL MVP voting and won Gold Glove honors.

While Correa's free agency drew interest from several teams, Minnesota didn't make much noise in its pursuit of the star shortstop.

Just days prior to the signing, there was buzz that Houston's efforts to keep Correa were making progress. The Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, and Chicago Cubs were among the teams linked to Correa prior to his surprise choice to join the Twins.

Last week, Minnesota made a couple big trades to acquire Gio Urshela and Gary Sanchez from the Yankees, and Sonny Gray from the Cincinnati Reds.

The Twins finished last place in the AL Central last season with a 73-89 record. The team hasn't won a playoff game since 2004.
