Pirates Make Another Hype Video For A Minor Addition
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

A few weeks ago, the Pittsburgh Pirates were under fire for preparing a hype video for new signing Vince Velasquez.

Velasquez has been wildly inconsistent throughout his entire MLB career, so it was certainly shocking to see the Pirates’ social media team prepare a welcoming video.

This week, they prepared another hype video for Rich Hill.

Now, Hill has achieved much more than Velasquez in MLB.

He has a career 3.85 ERA, a couple of Pitcher of the Month designations, and a reputation for being a solid backend starter at this point.

The Pirates will be his 12th MLB team.

However, he is already 42 and is, most likely, trade bait.

Yes: if he has a strong first half, the Pirates will almost certainly turn him into a prospect come the trade deadline.

This is why it’s a bit strange to see them producing a hype video (very well done, by the way) for a pitcher that may not be on the roster come August.

The Pirates might be better off focusing on acquiring young talent via the draft and the international market and keeping the precious few stars they produce.

On Friday, it was revealed that they offered young star Bryan Reynolds a six-year, $75 million contract (a $12.5 million annual average value).

That’s way below market value for someone who has proven to be an All-Star caliber talent and is still young.

We are not criticizing their decision to add Hill to their roster, but they should be doing all they can to build around Reynolds, not trading him.
