Philadelphia Phillies Slugger Delivers Odd Quote About Baseball, Milk & Wine

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos just dropped quite the pearl of wisdom in a recent interview with The Athletic's Matt Gelb.

While discussing his role in the Phillies' lineup and how he has grown over the years, Castellanos compared baseball players to milk and wine. Here is how he broke down the analogy, per Gelb:

“There’s a lot of baseball players that are like milk,” Castellanos said. “Milk is only good when it’s fresh. And then as you leave it out a while, it spoils. There are some other baseball players that are like wine. What happens with wine?”

It ages well.

“Exactly,” Castellanos said. “Those are the only two kinds. You’re either milk or wine. There’s no in the middle.”

Castellanos is no stranger to his quotes picking up steam on social media – at the MLB All-Star Game last summer, he notably crowned Scooby-Doo as his favorite superhero. His poorly-timed home runs and on-field interactions with his 10-year-old son have gone viral as well.

The 32-year-old slugger played seven seasons with the Detroit Tigers before he was traded to the Chicago Cubs. After a two-year stint with the Cincinnati Reds, where he made his first All-Star appearance in 2021, Castellanos inked a five-year, $100 million deal with the Phillies.

Castellanos struggled in his first season with the Phillies, but he bounced back in 2023. Heading into 2024, FanGraphs' ZiPS projections have him on pace to finish the year batting .258 with 23 home runs, 85 RBI, a .751 OPS and a 0.5 WAR.

As the rest of his contract plays out, it remains to be seen if Castellanos ages like milk or wine.
