Padres bring back eight-time All-Star Robinson Cano on minor-league deal

Cano, 39, signed with the Padres as a free agent in May, a week after being released by the New York Mets. San Diego released Cano on June 2. 

In 24 games with the Mets and Padres this season, Cano batted .149/.182/.189 with 11 hits and an RBI in 77 plate appearances. 

"I think he wants to get some consistent at-bats and see what's there. I talked to him for a while, and he wasn't getting consistent at-bats in New York; he wasn't here," San Diego manager Bob Melvin said of Cano returning. "He loved being here with our guys; he fit in really well. The last thing you want to do is call it a day and think to yourself, 'if I get a bunch of at-bats, is there something left in the tank?' I think that's where he's at right now." 

Cano has played 17 major-league seasons for the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Mets, and Padres. An eight-time All-Star, Cano has earned five Silver Slugger awards and two Gold Gloves. 

For his career, Cano has slashed .301/.351/.489 with 335 home runs and 1,306 RBI, playing 2,258 games.
