One NL West team reportedly still in on Matt Chapman

Matt Chapman and the San Francisco Giants have been linked since the start of the offseason. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, nothing has changed in that regard.

Heyman reported that the Giants are still in touch with Chapman as spring training approaches. He is one of the top remaining free agents the Giants are reportedly interested in, as Jorge Soler, Blake Snell and Cody Bellinger have all been linked to San Francisco recently.

Chapman's 2023 showing was a mixed bag. He produced a .240/.330/.424 batting line in his 581 plate appearances, hitting 17 homers and 39 doubles.

While that production may be disappointing for a third baseman, Chapman was stellar defensively. He saved 12 runs for the Blue Jays in 2023, taking home his fourth career Gold Glove.

The Giants have been considered one of the favorites for Chapman since the offseason began. Manager Bob Melvin is familiar with Chapman from their days in Oakland.

The Giants have been trying to attract marquee talent to San Francisco for years and have come up short. Jung Hoo Lee helps the lineup, but there remains a dearth of power as well. Chapman would be a part of the solution.

The third baseman has other suitors. The Cubs and Yankees have been linked to Chapman at various points in the offseason. A reunion with the Blue Jays still makes sense although Justin Turner signed in Toronto.

San Francisco is going to have competition for his services. Nevertheless, Chapman and the Giants remain a perfect fit. It may just be a matter of time.
