Minor League Report: Orelvis Martinez hit a grand slam, Vancouver was no-hit, and more!

Moreover, Orelvis Martinez hit a grand slam that went 469 feet into the second deck of the outfield. This was his second home run of the season, and honestly, they should be calling him up as soon as possible. With the home run, his hitting streak has moved to 11 games.

There were also a handful of doubles from Bisons’ batters, with Palmegiani hitting one double, while Spencer Horwitz also hit a double. Addison Barger hit two doubles, giving him a .304/.435/.500 slash line with a home run in 69 plate appearances for a 146 wRC+.

As for multi-hit games, Barger had two hits, Palmegiani had a three-hit game, while Rafael Lantigua and Max McDowell both had two singles.

Nick Fraze was the starting pitcher, going 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K with a home run given up. Luis Quiñones had the best day at the office, pitching two innings, giving up three hits but allowing no runs to score. Zach Pop was the only other pitcher who didn’t allow a run.

Mason Fluharty was tagged with the blown save, but also the win as his record now moves to 2-1. He gave up three earned runs and walked three batters. Still doesn’t change my mind about how quickly he’ll make it to the big leagues, though.

New Hampshire allow late runs to lose their game

New Hampshire scored two runs in the first two innings, with the Portland Sea Dogs scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. It was a stalemate until the bottom of the eighth, when the Sea Dogs scored three runs with one swing of  the bat, a triple off Matt Lugo’s bat, giving the Boston affiliate a 5-2 win.

There were no home runs hit by Blue Jays batters, but there were three doubles from the team, as Alan Roden, Miguel Hiraldo, and Rainer Nuñez all hit an extra-base hit. The latter had the only multi-hit game.

As for players with a hit, Josh Kasevich, Alex De Jesus, Nunez, and Devonte Brown all had singles as well. Michael Turconi drew the only walk for the Fisher Cats, while the team struck out 10 times.

Trenton Wallace started the game and had a pretty good start, finishing with a line of 4 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, along with three hit by pitches. This included a big strikeout in the bottom of the second to get out of a bases loaded jam.

Hunter Gregory had a strong outing in relief, finishing with a line of 2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K to bring his season ERA to 2.16, while Jimmy Burnette gave up his first earned runs on Wednesday, finishing with a line of 1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K.

Vancouver Canadians were no hit

As you can imagine, the Vancouver Canadians lost this game 5-0, as they failed to get on base via a hit. That doesn’t mean they didn’t reach base, as Dasan Brown, Ryan McCarty, and Brennan Orf all walked once, while Jommer Hernandez walked twice. Moreover, Jeffrey Wehler was hit by a pitch in the funniest way possible.

As for their pitching, Chris McElvain made his second start of the season and finished with a line of 4 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K with two home runs given up. Grayson Thurman pitched an inning giving up a hit and striking out two batters, while Johnathan Lavallee pitched a clean inning and struck out one batter.

Conor Larkin pitched two thirds of an inning, walking two batters, striking out a batter, and giving up an unearned run. Naswell Paulino (who celebrated his birthday on Wednesday) pitched one inning and one third, striking out two batters and walking one.

Dunedin were blown out

For only the third time this season, the Dunedin Blue Jays lost as the Clearwater Threshers defeated Toronto’s Single-A affiliate 10-1. Thing brings their record to 8-3, which still is the best in the Florida State League West.

There were only five hits in this game, and Daniel Pérez picked up the only extra-base hit, a triple in the bottom of the eighth. Last season in the Dominican Summer League, the 22-year-old slashed .294/.421/.479 with five homers in 205 plate appearances. Expect the Cuban-born first baseman to move up the minor league levels pretty quickly, given his age.

Other players with a hit were Tucker Toman, who also walked twice, Alexis Hernandez, Yhoangel Aponte, and Manuel Beltre.

As for their pitching, Juaron Watts-Brown made his second professional start, finishing with a line of 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K to bring his season ERA to 5.79. Yondrei Rojas also had a rough game, giving up four runs in his third of an inning of work.

Jerry Huntzinger, a catcher turned pitcher, gave up an earned run while walking two batters and striking out one in an inning and a third of work. Another converted pitcher, Sebastian Espino, pitched in this game, and he finished with a line of 2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.

Knuckleballer Jordan Powell made his organization debut, finishing with a line of 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K.

The D-Jays will be back in action on Thursday.
