Mike Piazza 'praying' Jacob deGrom re-signs with Mets

New York Mets legend and Hall of Famer Mike Piazza is hopeful free-agent ace pitcher Jacob deGrom will re-sign with the Queens club.

"I learned as a player you do have to make a decision that you feel is best for your career," Piazza told SNY’s Michelle Margaux (h/t Phillip Martinez) at the Italian American Baseball Foundation gala. "I hope [deGrom] takes all that into account and realizes what he has here and how much he’s loved here."

It was reported Thursday that "Mets people seem to think" deGrom prefers to re-sign with the team after he officially opted out of his contract last month. Philadelphia Phillies starter Zack Wheeler, deGrom's former teammate with the Mets, said in October that deGrom "told me he is happy there," while Mets outfielder Mark Canha said, "Jake told me he wants to come back" and "he really likes it here."

Piazza believes Mets fans should cherish what the two-time National League Cy Young Award winner gave them even if he signs elsewhere.

"Regardless of what he does, he’s an amazing guy, and Mets fans should treasure what he’s done up until this point and going further healthy, if he stays, what he can contribute," Piazza remarked. "I do feel he has a lot left in the tank."

Piazza followed in the footsteps of former New York Yankees stars such as Don Mattingly, David Cone and Dwight "Doc" Gooden, all of whom have publicly campaigned for American League Most Valuable Player Aaron Judge to re-sign with the Bronx Bombers. Coincidentally, the Yankees reportedly concentrating all their efforts on holding on to Judge is one reason it's thought they're not in on deGrom.

The Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Rays are other clubs that have been linked with deGrom. All three appear unlikely to win his signature for different reasons.

"I pray that he stays," Piazza added about deGrom. "But that remains to be seen."

It seems Piazza's prayers have a chance to soon be answered.
