Mets lose Trevor Williams to the Nationals

The New York Mets just lost a key, underrated asset to their 2022 success in free agency. Reports are confirming that right-hander Trevor Williams is signing with the Washington Nationals. The contract length is two years and worth $13 million.

Williams was immensely valuable to the Mets a season ago with all the versatility he offered. He provided the Mets with 30 total appearances a year ago, nine of those being starts. Not only did Williams step up in two different roles, but he had a very good year.

Despite a 3-5 record, Williams recorded a 3.21 ERA. He gave the Mets 89.2 innings pitched and totaled 84 strikeouts. Williams finished the season with a stellar 1.23 WHIP.

Trevor Williams is a tough loss for the Mets:

Rumors just as recent as yesterday were suggesting that the Mets were interested in bringing Williams back. Supposedly, the Mets let him know that he would have had a chance to start this upcoming year.

Williams had also indicated that he had kept in contact with the Mets throughout the free agency process. He also said that he had not “closed the door” on returning to the Mets.

Ultimately, Williams is a young and talented arm with flexibility who certainly would have been nice to keep. From his standpoint, though, he will likely have a better chance of being a full-time starter with the Nationals. Whereas he would likely be competing with not one but two arms in David Peterson and Tylor Megill with the Mets.
