The move corresponds with MLB teams needing to trim their rosters down to 26 players, but it also signals the end to what has been a tumultuous union between Cano and the Mets.
The 39-year-old veteran, who is owed $24 million each of the next two seasons, has struggled in the early part of the season, hitting just .195 with one home run and three RBI in 41 at-bats. The five-time Silver Slugger has only played 168 games since joining the Mets in 2018 due to serving suspensions for using PEDs.
In designating Robinson Cano for assignment today, the #Mets are on the hook for $40.5M through the 2023 season.

The potential future Hall of Famer has slashed .302/.352/.490 over his 17-season career with 335 home runs and 1,305 RBI.
The Mets also optioned right-handed pitcher Yoan Lopez to triple-A as part of the roster-refining process.
RHP Yoan López has been optioned to Triple-A following last night’s game and today infielder Robinson Canó has been designated for assignment, bringing the roster to 26 players.
