Mariners acquire OF Jesse Winker, 3B Eugenio Suarez in trade with Reds

The Seattle Mariners made a trade to add a pair of big bats to their lineup Monday, acquiring outfielder Jesse Winker and third baseman Eugenio Suarez from the Cincinnati Reds.

Seattle sent pitcher Justin Dunn, outfielder Jake Fraley, pitching prospect Brandon Williamson and a player to be named later to the Reds in the deal.

Winker, 28, was a first-round pick for the Reds in 2012 and made his debut in the majors five years later in 2017. He earned All-Star honors in 2021 when he hit .305 with 24 home runs and 71 runs batted in.

Suarez, 30, was an All-Star in 2018 and finished top 20 in National League MVP voting in back-to-back seasons. While he hit just .198 in 2021, he still managed to finish with 31 home runs.

“We’re incredibly excited at the chance to acquire two All-Star caliber players,” Mariners president Jerry Dipoto said. “Jesse has been one of the premier offensive players in the league over the past two seasons, while Suárez brings a long track record as a power hitter. Our goal is to reach the postseason this year, and we feel that these additions give us the depth and impact in our lineup necessary to compete for one of those spots.”

The deal comes one day after Cincinnati sent two-time All-Star pitcher Sonny Gray to the Minnesota Twins.
