Manuel Margot signs two-year, $19M extension with Rays

With the 2022 MLB Opening Day just hours away, the Tampa Bay Rays announced the signing of outfielder Manuel Margot to a two-year, $19 million extension.

The Rays and Margot discussed an extension throughout the spring and finally got a deal done.

"I definitely know my role I have on this team and the tactics, the way they go about their team here, and I feel confident and very comfortable," Margot said via an interpreter this week

Tampa Bay general manager Peter Bendix helped announce the deal, mentioning that Margot's all-around game and presence in the clubhouse played a considerable role in giving him an extension.

"Manny helps us in many ways and we're thrilled to reach an agreement with him on a multiyear extension," Bendix said. "The quality of his at-bats, his outfield defense, and aggression and instincts on the bases make him a well-rounded player."

The 27-year-old Margot, who could've opted for free agency at the end of the season, decided to re-up with the Rays for two more seasons. Bally Sports Florida's Tricia Whitaker broke down details of the deal, including $7 million in 2023, $10 million in 2024 and a $12 million mutual option in 2025.

Since coming to the Rays, Margot has played in 172 games posting 146 hits, a .258 batting average, 11 HR, 68 RBI and 25 stolen bases.

Tampa Bay acquired Margot in a 2020 trade, which sent Emilio Pagan to the San Diego Padres.
