Journeyman Hurler Floated As Reunion Candidate For Mets This Offseason

The New York Mets will need to make additions up and down the roster this offseason.

New York will be one of the busiest teams in baseball this offseason. Over the last few weeks, the Mets have cleared up plenty of roster space since adding former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns as the club's president of baseball operations. 

The Mets have just 27 players currently on the club's 40-man roster and will be busy filling it out this offseason. While the Mets likely will aim to land some star power, they also will need to continue to add more depth to the roster. One player who could be a depth option and reunion candidate this offseason is reliever Trevor Gott, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. 

"The Mets have six free agents following the non-tender deadline: Gott, Carlos Carrasco, Adam Ottavino, Daniel Vogelbach, Jeff Brigham, and Sam Coonrod," Feinsand said. "Gott was acquired from the (Seattle Mariners) in early July, posting a 4.34 ERA in 34 appearances for the Mets."

Gott has been a journeyman throughout his eight-year big league career. The 31-year-old was selected in the sixth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft by the San Diego Padres and eventually made his big league debut with the Los Angeles Angels in 2015. Since then he has spent time with the Washington Nationals, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers, Mariners, and Mets. 

New York acquired Gott during the 2023 season and he made 34 appearances with the club and compiled a 4.34 ERA. The Mets are going to spend big this offseason and likely will need to add cheap, depth pieces as well. Gott could fall into that category.
