Josh Harrison Embracing Competition in Quest to Make Reds' Roster

The Reds signed Josh Harrison earlier this month to a minor league contract. 

The former All-Star is hoping to make the Reds' roster and bring a veteran spark to a young, but talented team.  

“It’s not the first non-roster spot contract that I’ve signed,” Harrison told reporters on Friday. “My whole career even being on a roster or on a contract there was uncertainty on things like am I going to be their everyday second baseman.”

The Reds have a crowded infield, led by Matt McLain and Elly De La Cruz. Harrison will need to show he still has something left in the tank if he's going to make the team.

The veteran is competing for a roster spot, not regular playing time. He'll have to beat out Jose Barrero to make the team.

“Competition is never anything that I’ve shied away from," Harrison said. “I watched this team last year. I had a good opportunity to watch this team last year I didn’t really play so I know what they bring to the table and they are full of energy. I still have a lot of energy I can play this game and I know I can help.”

Harrison believes he has a key attribute to help him get on the field. 

“You know the game is going that way. Versatility helps," Harrison said. "I’m a guy that literally got my opportunity being versatile so I know what this team brings and I know what I can bring. The only thing I’m not bringing is a catcher's mitt and catcher's equipment. If I needed one of those I would borrow somebody’s and call pitchouts.”

The 36-year-old is a Cincinnati native. He spent the first eight years of his career with the Pirates. He appeared in 40 games for the Phillies last season, posting a .204/.263/.291 slash line. 

“The game of baseball presents a lot of challenges and opportunities. You might start the game at second base or you might go to third base in the third inning and you might go to the outfield," Harrison said. "I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity and I’m ready to get going."
