Giants Taking A Chance On A Veteran Reliever

The San Francisco Giants are taking a chance on a former All-Star reliever.

Late on Thursday, San Francisco inked veteran right-hander Trevor Rosenthal to a one-year deal.

The deal is worth $4.5 million, but Rosenthal can make up to $1 million in incentives for games pitched at the Major League level.

Rosenthal last pitched in 2020 with the San Diego Padres.

He had signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Athletics prior to the 2021 season, but he missed the entire season due to thoracic outlet syndrome.

Giants insider Danny Emerman tweeted the news, as well as the fact that the Giants will be placing him on the 15-Day IL due to a hamstring injury, and that he will need significant time to ramp up.

This could turn out to be a good move for the Giants as they look to turn things around in the second half and gun for a Wild Card spot.

Giants Take A Chance On Rosenthal

Rosenthal is a veteran reliever with a ton of experience and a ton of success at the Major League level.

He was an All-Star in 2015 with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Injuries have been a problem for him.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017, the Cardinals released him.

He had brief stints with the Washington Nationals and the Detroit Tigers before the Kansas City Royals signed him.

He was traded to the Padres at the deadline in 2020 and proved to be a valuable bullpen piece for them.

If he can get healthy and replicate those numbers, he could turn out to be a real bargain for the Giants.

Rosenthal has a lifetime 3.36 ERA over 373 career appearances.

He was 1-0 with a 1.90 ERA in 2020 over 23 appearances.
