Former Phillies Fan Favorite Linked to Yankees
John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Phillies look to be fairly set on what their Opening Day roster will look like. Some of the fringe spots will still be a battle throughout the spring before the first regular season game occurs.

But as teams across the league are looking to finalize their rosters, many high-profile players remain on the free agency market with questions persisting when they might sign.

By now, everyone knows the three remaining stars in Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery and Matt Chapman, but there are still solid pieces out there who could help a team.

One of those players is former Phillies fan favorite Jean Segura.

The infielder spent four seasons in Philadelphia after he was traded by the Seattle Mariners in December 2018.

Segura put together a good stretch during his tenure, slashing .281/.337/.418 with 43 home runs, 130 extra-base hits and 176 RBI.

He was largely phased out during his last year with the team in 2022

The 33-year-old spent last season with the Miami Marlins after signing a two-year deal with them in free agency.

Unfortunately, he was only able to play 85 games before he was shipped to the Cleveland Guardians in August 2023 and was immediately released after the trade was completed.

Not playing a single game after his release, he is not viewed as a desirable player on the market.

However, Nick Deeds of MLB Trade Rumors thinks the New York Yankees could target the veteran to be one of their bench bats and versatile defenders for the upcoming season.

It makes sense.

Segura has a career bWAR of 26.1 and defensive bWAR of 7.3 over his 12 years in the MLB.

He would be a solid addition to any team, especially in a bench role.

With payroll issues at the forefront of mind for the Yankees, it's unlikely that he would cost them too much, especially if signed to a minor league deal to start.
