Ex-Red Sox Hurler Joins Rockies Roster In Effort To Complete MLB Comeback

A former member of the Boston Red Sox has officially made his way back to Major League Baseball.

The Colorado Rockies announced that they have selected the contract of left-hander Fernando Abad -- meaning he will join the big league club prior to Monday's game.

The 37-year-old signed a minor league deal with the Rockies in January, which included a non-roster invite to spring training. After impressing with the minor-league affiliate Albuquerque Isotopes, and representing the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, Abad is looking to help bolster the Rockies bullpen.

Abad’s hot start for the Isotopes proved he was ready to try his hand in the big leagues again after posting a 1.69 ERA with a 20-to-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 0.69 WHIP in 16 innings pitched. 

His time with the Red Sox may not have been Cy Young caliber, but he found success in the bullpen during the 2017 season after a brutal end to the 2016 season.

Prior to his signing with the Rockies, the southpaw spent the entirety of the 2022 season with the Seattle Mariners minor league system. His last showing in the big leagues was with the Baltimore Orioles in 2021 where struggled mightily. 

Abad is expected to make his return to the mound in the Rockies three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.
