This is Dominic Canzone's Diamondbacks 2023 Player Review. This article is part of a series of player reviews for the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a surprising and marvelous year for the team as they won 84 games to make the postseason. They advanced all the way to Game Five of the World Series before bowing out to the Texas Rangers. There are 54 players in all that had at least one at-bat or pitched at least one inning for the team this past season. They are being presented in reverse order of their aWAR (average WAR-Wins Above Replacement) produced, which is the average of Baseball Reference and Fangraphs WAR. These are their season stories.

Dominic Canzone was the latest top outfield prospect that made his MLB debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks over the last couple of seasons. He made his MLB debut on July 8th against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went 0-3 but did get on base via a walk. However, it should be mentioned that Canzone arguably should've been up in the MLB far sooner than July 8th.

The outfielder started the season with the Reno Aces in Triple-A. Canzone obliterated minor league pitching to put it nicely. He hit .354/.431/.634/1.065 with 91 hits, 16 home runs, 37 extra-base hits, 71 RBI, and a 39/40 walk-strikeout ratio in just 71 games. Yes, Reno is a hitter-friendly environment, but those are true video game numbers.

Canzone started his career off with multiple pinch-hit games. This wasn't the best introduction for Canzone, but it was what the team needed. However, he started his career off 1-11. Then over a 10-game run from July 20th to July 30th, Canzone batted .296/.345/.482/.826 with eight hits, two doubles, a home run, seven RBI, one walk, and just four strikeouts. He had three multi-hit games and it appeared that the Diamondbacks yet another strong left-handed outfielder.

Then, at the trade deadline, Canzone was surprisingly packaged with Josh Rojas and prospect Ryan Bliss for closer Paul Sewald. The Diamondbacks knew that they needed a closer badly if they had any hope of making the playoffs, let alone reaching the World Series.

Ultimately, Canzone being included in the trade enabled the Diamondbacks to have the ability to make it to the World Series. Sewald fixed a lot wrong with the roster. However, it does sting knowing the potential that Canzone had for the next seven seasons to help this D-backs ball club. That's just the price one has to pay for quality pitching at the trade deadline.

2024 Status and Outlook:

The Diamondbacks no longer have Canzone, so his outlook for the D-backs perspective does not matter much. However, he is projected for a regular spot in the Mariners outfield. He's entering his age 26 season and is controllable through the 2029 season presuming he doesn't get sent down at all. Canzone did hit 11 doubles and five home runs with 13 RBI for Seattle over just 44 games. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks have Paul Sewald for the 2024 season before he becomes a free agent.
