Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson suffered right elbow contusion vs. Giants
Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

After being struck by a comebacker and not returning against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night, Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson suffered a right elbow contusion.

In the 5-0 loss to San Francisco , Mike Yastrzemski hit the ball right at Nelson’s right arm in the second inning and was visibly in extreme pain. Once he flipped the ball to Christian Walker for the third out, Nelson rushed straight for the clubhouse.

Throwing two scoreless innings and allowing just two hits before his exit, the D-backs announced that the right-hander was not going to return.

Ryne Nelson was removed from tonight’s game due to a right elbow contusion,” the Diamondbacks said on X (formerly Twitter).

At the time of reporting, there are no updates regarding whether the 26-year-old will be placed on the injured list or not.

With Jordan Montgomery set to make his Diamondbacks debut tonight against the Giants, Arizona will have to contemplate what roster move they’ll have to make to fit him once he is activated.

If Nelson is not out long-term, the D-backs may send reliever Logan Allen back down to Triple-A Reno. Receiving a call-up to the MLB on Wednesday, Allen pitched 4.2 innings against the Giants, giving up one run on three hits following Nelson’s departure.

So far this season, Nelson is 1-2 in four starts with a 4.60 ERA, 13 strikeouts, and a 1.53 WHIP in 15.2 innings.

The Diamondbacks’ 56th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft has played three seasons with the ballclub. Overall, Nelson has a 10-11 record, 4.85 ERA, 125 strikeouts and 1.37 WHIP.
