Diamondbacks release 2023 Wild Card roster
Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

Just hours before Game 1, the Arizona Diamondbacks unveiled their Wild Card roster, and for the most part, it held few surprises.

One notable omission from the roster is Jace Peterson, whom the Diamondbacks acquired from the A’s at the trade deadline.

However, during his 41 games with the Diamondbacks this season, Peterson recorded a batting average of just .143, along with a career-low hard-hit rate of 27%.

In his place, the Diamondbacks are opting to retain rookie Jordan Lawlar, who was called up in August.

Lawlar, a first-round draft pick for the Diamondbacks in 2021, is expected to contribute as a pinch runner, thanks to his impressive speed.

On a different note, a name on the roster that might raise eyebrows among fans is outfielder Pavin Smith.

Smith’s season at the plate featured a lackluster .188 batting average, and he enters the playoffs amidst a challenging 1-22 slump.

The first pitch for the Diamondbacks’ matchup against the Brewers is scheduled for 4:08 PM.
