Codi Heuer Exits Tuesday's Triple-A Game with Arm Injury
Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

The last thing the Chicago Cubs were hoping for was bad news regarding one of their up and coming relief pitchers. On Tuesday, RHP Codi Heuer was making yet another appearance at Triple-A Iowa as he makes his way back to the majors. However, a hiccup might further delay his return. Heuer came up in pain after throwing a pitch and dancing around in discomfort.

Heuer left the game following the event. The righty is returning from Tommy John surgery after missing the entire 2022 season. Now, the natural concern lies with his arm, as another TJ operation for further interrupt his big-league career.

As he works back, Heuer has made 15 appearances with Iowa. In 12.2 innings of work, Heuer owns a 7.82 ERA with 15 K's but 11 walks. Naturally, getting back to full strength is a process and Heuer was throwing high-90's as he works his way back. That said, Tuesday presents a scary scenario. Especially when you consider he's only allowed three earned runs in the month of June over six appearances. Things have been looking up for Heuer prior to Tuesday.

After beginning the season on the 60-day IL, Heuer was looking promising as an addition to the backend of the Cubs' bullpen. With the recent success from Julian Merryweather, Mark Leiter Jr., and Adbert Alzolay, Codi Heuer's insertion into the back of the bullpen seemed like a natural fit. Now, there is a lot of concern if he will even pitch again in 2023. There are no further updates at this time as he undergoes further evaluation.
