Cleveland Guardians, Cincinnati Reds Net Top Picks in 2024 MLB Draft After Wild Lottery

The 2024 MLB Draft order has been determined, and the second lottery in league history was chock full of surprises.

Country music artist Brad Paisley announced the results on stage at the annual Winter Meetings in Nashville on Tuesday night. The Cleveland Guardians came away with the No. 1 overall pick, despite entering the night with the ninth-best odds at 2.0%.

The Cincinnati Reds also enjoyed a friendly bump, jumping from No. 13 to No. 2. The Redlegs had a winning record in 2023, and their already-elite young core is set to get even more reinforcements next summer.

The MLB only adopted a lottery system to determine its draft order in 2022. The Pittsburgh Pirates came way with the top pick out of the third spot, while the last-place Washington Nationals got the second pick and the Oakland Athletics fell from No. 2 to No. 6.

This time around, it was the Royals who came away as the biggest losers, also dropping four spots to No. 6. The Athletics didn't have much better luck this year, either, as the worst team in baseball wound up with the No. 4 pick.
