Chicago White Sox Add Longtime Reliever to List of Non-Roster Invitees to Spring Training

The 40-year-old California native made his major league debut back in 2008. He's pitched for a bevy of teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, and Texas Rangers.

He's served as both a starter and a reliever in his career, but has been almost exclusively a reliever since 2018. Lifetime, he's 49-63 with a 4.30 ERA. He's appeared in 607 career games and helped the Braves win the 2021 World Series, where they beat the Houston Astros.

With the White Sox, Chavez should get an opportunity to make the team in a bullpen role. First-year general manager Chris Getz has totally reshaped the roster this offseason, trading away Gregory Santos and Aaron Bummer. Furthermore, Liam Hendriks was non-tendered as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.

The White Sox have also reworked the starting rotation under Getz, bringing in Erik Fedde, Chris Flexen, Mike Soroka, Jared Shuster, and John Brebbia.

The Sox finished fourth in the American League Central in 2023, just ahead of the Kansas City Royals. Given the roster churn and the potential trade of Dylan Cease this season, the 2024 season figures to have a similar result.
