Carlos Gomez explains reason for his temper tantrum

Carlos Gomez threw a fit in the dugout on Wednesday after he struck out early in a 3-0 loss to the Miami Marlins, but there was more to the temper tantrum than being upset with himself for failing to put a ball in play.

When the count was 0-1, Gomez squared like he was going to bunt and then had to jump out of the way of a Jose Urena pitch. He believed the pitch had hit his hand, which is why he was ended up demolishing a water cooler in the dugout after he struck out. Gomez spoke after the game about why he got so frustrated.

“I get hit like 96 on my hand and I should be on first,” Gomez said. “After you get hit by a pitch and then you strike out, it’s frustrating at that moment. … We’re human. We can get mad. It doesn’t mean we’re not professional.”

It’s hard to tell if the pitch made contact with Gomez’s hand, but you can see the full video of his at-bat here.

Gomez has been known for losing his temper after strikeouts in the past, but it sound like the circumstances were a bit different with his latest outburst.
