Cardinals SP Steven Matz diagnosed with torn MCL, putting season in doubt

The rest of the 2022 campaign might be in jeopardy for St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Steven Matz.

After exiting Saturday's contest against the Cincinnati Reds with a leg injury, the Cardinals announced on Sunday that Matz had torn his left MCL.

Matz is due to meet with the Cardinals' team surgeon in St. Louis on Monday to determine whether or not surgery is needed.

The left-hander had just returned to the Cardinals rotation on Saturday after missing more than a month of action with a left shoulder impingement. Matz earned the win in his first start since May 22, allowing two earned runs off only three hits in 5.1 innings before leaving the game.

Matz has a 4-3 record with a 5.70 ERA in ten starts this season for St. Louis.

The Cardinals inked Matz to a four-year, $44M free-agent contract this offseason.

Matz had arguably the best season of his eight-year career for the Toronto Blue Jays last season. In 29 starts for the Blue Jays, Matz compiled a 14-7 record with a 3.82 ERA.
