Braves reportedly make a couple of shocking NLDS roster moves
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The Braves haven’t finalized their postseason roster or at least made it public yet, but we have our first confirmed addition, and it may come as a shock to some fans. According to Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Daysbel Hernandez has made the NLDS roster.

Buried in the article, Toscano also reports that “at this point” Kyle Wright and Jesse Chavez didn’t make the postseason roster, which is also a bit surprising.

Wright has missed a ton of the season, and when he has pitched, he’s looked like a shell of himself. Still, many expected him to make the roster, given his stuff and playoff experience. In that same breath, Chavez has loads of experience and seemingly turns into the best version of himself with the Braves. He also boasts a ridiculous 1.56 ERA this season, and the Braves bullpen doesn’t exactly have a ton of spectacular bullpen options outside of 4-5 guys.

Both are shocking, but Hernandez might not be as much because he’s got filthy stuff. Strikeouts play in October, and he’s got it in spades. The youngster can kiss triple digits and pairs it with a nasty slider. He had 32 punchouts in 22 innings pitched before getting called up in July.

However, Hernandez has only spent a second in the majors. In 3.2 innings with the Braves, he has fanned six batters, including three in one inning, but has also allowed three earned runs. His track record in the minors is much more impressive, though.

Over 24.2 innings across three different minor league levels this season, Hernandez posted a 2.19 ERA.
