Astros Post Heartfelt Goodbye to Departing Reliever

There's no doubt the pitching unit, and more specifically the bullpen, will look a bit different in 2024 for the Houston Astros.

After fielding a unit that turned into one of the best in baseball the past few years, the Astros lost three of their key relievers to free agency this offseason.

With seemingly limited financial options to start the winter, a reunion with all three, let alone one, was off the table.

So, Hector Neris, Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek hit the open market searching for a new team to join.

Neris officially found his next home after signing a deal with the Chicago Cubs. It will be a one-year contract with a club option for 2025.

Houston posted a heartfelt goodbye on their social media page after the deal was signed.

The right-hander initially joined the Astros in free agency ahead of the 2022 season after leaving the Philadelphia Phillies.

He had great moments during his two years in Houston, becoming a World Series champion and being part of the combined no-hitter in 2022.

Neris also became an elite reliever during his tenure, posting an ERA of 2.69 over his 141 appearances, and ended last season with a 1.71 ERA that increased his value on the open market.

To fill the void of their three star relievers departing this offseason, the Astros finally opened up their checkbook and signed Josh Hader to a megadeal.

They're hoping he can be a major part of a bullpen that wants to continue being a dominant unit.

Neris was a major part of the team who won the franchise's second World Series title, and he'll forever be remembered that way no matter where he finishes his career.
