Angels Top Prospect Seems Poised to Take Jose Suarez's Starting Pitcher Spot
USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Rangers mopped the field with the Angels on Sunday to close out their first series of 2023 as Jose Suarez got them off to the worst start possible. He only lasted two innings on the mound and gave up seven runs on six hits due to him insisting to play through a shoulder injury.

Chase Silseth was recently called up for just the second time in his young career and he was asked to take over the starting duties once Suarez could no longer pitch in the 16-8 loss. This was a big ask due to him exclusively pitching out of the bullpen this season and he gave up five hits but its looking like he is set to be moved into the starting rotation.

"Chase Silseth throws 3 1/3 innings today, and threw 72 pitches. The Angels asked a lot of him, given that he hasn't started in a while. His velo and command were dipping considerably in the 7th. Chris Devenski in the game. Angels need to get 9 outs."

In four games with the Halos this season, he has taken the mound for eight innings and is currently posting a 3.24 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP. Looking back at his four minor league games in 2023 with the Salt Lake Bees, he was stellar as a starter with a 0.90 ERA.

Maybe the time off will do Suarez good once we find out the extent of his shoulder injury but for now, Silseth may get a bigger opportunity. Either way, the Angels' front office will look to do what is best for the team.
