Angels Sign Ex-Red Sox Catcher After Inconsistent Season To Add Depth
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

It sounds like the Los Angeles Angels landed a former member of the Boston Red Sox.

Los Angeles has been busy this offseason looking to add to the roster. The Angels haven't been able to make a major splash yet to replace two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani but have started adding some depth to the organization.

The Angels reportedly made another depth move Thursday and signed former Red Sox catcher Caleb Hamilton to a minor league deal, according to Beyond the Monster's Chris Henrique.

"Former WooSox catcher Caleb Hamilton has signed a MiLB deal with the Angels, per the transactions page," Henrique said. "Hamilton was an elite framer behind the plate last season. WooSox pitchers loved throwing to Caleb last season, great clubhouse guy, and a massive (Seattle Seahawks) fan."

Boston claimed Hamilton off waivers from the Minnesota Twins and was quickly designated for assignment and sent down to the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox. He spent the majority of the season in the minors and made 42 appearances with Worcester and was inconsistent offensively.

Hamilton clubbed four home runs and drove in 14 runs while slashing .167/.270/.304 in 42 games. The 29-year-old made four appearances with Boston and didn't collect a hit in five at-bats.

Although he struggled offensively, he was impressive defensively. Hamilton may not play much of a role at the big league level with Los Angeles in 2024, but he does provide the club a depth option with big league upside.

Hamilton likely will have a better chance of seeing time with the Angels at the big league level than he would have with Boston. The Red Sox currently have Connor Wong and Reese McGuire on the roster and elite prospect Kyle Teel could see some time at the big-league level as well.
