American League prospects to keep an eye on in 2023

With spring training only days away, here are some of the top prospects in the American League who have a chance to make an impact in the majors during the 2023 season.

Ricky Tiedemann, LHP, Toronto Blue Jays

Left-handed pitcher Ricky Tiedemann burst onto the scene in 2022 making his professional debut across three minor league levels.

In 78.2 innings pitched Tiedemann went 5-4 with a 2.17 ERA and 117 strikeouts.

Only 20 years old, Tiedemann comes into the 2023 season ranked as the number-one prospect in the Blue Jays organization according to MLB.com's rankings.

While he may not make the big league team out of camp, Tiedemann has the type of stuff that could see him fast-tracked to the majors.

Brooks Lee, SS/3B, Minnesota Twins

The eighth overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, Lee already possesses elite contact skills to go with power from both sides of the plate.

A career .351 hitter in college, Lee also has the potential to win a Gold Glove. Whether at shortstop or third base, Lee has the arm and instincts to project as a plus defender at either position.

He got a small sample of the minor leagues in 2022, batting .303 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 122 plate appearances.

Expected to begin the season in AA, Lee should get a taste of the majors in September. But his performance or injuries could get him there before that.

Tyler Gentry, OF, Kansas City Royals

Gentry, a 2020 third-round pick, is the only player on the list that isn't ranked in the top 100 prospects. He ended last season as the Royals' number-eight prospect but should find himself ranked higher this season.

In 2022 Gentry made huge adjustments after a mediocre debut in the minors in 2021. Gentry hit .326 with 21 home runs, 86 RBIs and 10 stolen bases while providing solid glove skills in the outfield.

The 24-year-old Gentry will have plenty of opportunities to impress during spring training. With his advanced bat skills and no clear-cut options in the outfield, a debut in the MLB should be expected in 2023.

Tyler Soderstrom, C/1B, Oakland Athletics

Ranked the 39th overall prospect in the MLB, and possessing above-average power Soderstrom has the clearest path on this list to play right away.

In 2022, he finished the season slashing .267/.324/.501 with 29 home runs and 105 RBIs.

While his catching ability is still a little behind his bat, the Athletics are still comfortable enough to let him split time between there and first base.

Look for the Athletics to give him a long look during spring training, with a good chance he starts the season in the MLB.
