Patrick Cantlay Confirms Meeting Between PIF and PGA Tour Policy Board Set for Monday

Rumblings of a meeting between the PGA Tour Policy Board and PIF governor Yasir al-Rumayyan were confirmed by Patrick Cantlay following his final round on Sunday at THE PLAYERS. It is the latest development in an attempt to bring golf's stars back together.

While a meeting between the PIF governor and PGA Tour players is absolutely newsworthy and a potential step towards bringing the game back together, which many professional golfers have opined for in recent days, according to Cantlay, don't expect a deal to be announced this week.

“I don’t imagine anything substantive,” Cantlay stated, followed by his understanding of what will take place during Monday's get-together, “It’s more of a meet and greet.”

It remains uncertain if all members of the PGA player advisory will meet with the PIF's head honcho on Monday, but from what Cantlay told reporters on Sunday, it is likely he will be in attendance.

“I’m excited to hear what I will learn, and I’ll have a lot more information after.”

Outside of Cantlay, the PGA Tour player board is currently comprised of Jordan Speith, Charley Hoffman, Peter Malnati, Webb Simpson and most notably Tiger Woods. Malnati, who found himself in the thick of the competition on Saturday afternoon at the 50th PLAYERS Championship sounded off on the developing situation.

"I think something needs to happen for our sport. I would love to see a unified game where we can -- it doesn't mean that -- I want there to be different tours where guys can play, I want that, but I want to see a unified game where, when we have events like THE PLAYERS Championship, that we have all the best players in the world and we're proud to call 'em PGA TOUR members. That's what I want. I don't know how we get there, but that's what I want."

Malnati's sentiments have certainly been echoed by other members of the PGA Tour in recent weeks. Hell, even Rory McIlroy, a former member of the player board, chimed in with his approval of a meeting between LIV Golf's backer and the Tour players in an effort to bridge the gap between the two sides.

Despite the recent deal struck between the PGA Tour and SSG that will undoubtedly help fund a more competitive PGA, a void still remains in the world of professional golf. A void that will likely remain ever present, at least until the world's best players are competing against each other on a fairly regular basis once again.

Hopefully Monday's "meet and greet" goes well.
