Jon Rahm surges up leaderboard with 8-under 63 at Open Championship

From struggling to make the cut to surging up the leaderboard, Jon Rahm used moving day at The Open Championship to put himself into contention for a third major championship.

Rahm shot an 8-under 63 on Saturday to go from 2-over par to 6-under and in second place. The 63 is the lowest round ever for a player at Hoylake in an Open Championship.

Rahm began the tournament with a 3-over 74 on Thursday before shooting 1-under par on Friday. On the front nine Saturday, he worked his way to even for the tournament with birdies on Nos. 5 and 9.

Rahm was on a roll from there. He birdied holes 10 through 12 to give him four consecutive birdies and give him a spot in the top five.

He had back-to-back birdies at 15 and 16 to put him in a tie for second.

If one hole served as a microcosm for Rahm's first three rounds at The Open, it was the par-5 No. 18. After recording bogeys on the first two days, Rahm birdied the hole on Saturday to cap his phenomenal round.

When all was said and done on Saturday, Rahm's big round had him sitting in third place, six shots behind leader Brian Harman and one back of second-place golfer Cameron Young. Rahm is now a threat to win The Open, something that seemed impossible before the third round began.
